You can do anything with the Tesla app, from calling your car to turning on the air conditioning from afar on a hot summer day. But if the app won’t join, none of this will work. This is a list of the most popular ways to get the Tesla app to connect to your car again and understand the tesla app connection issues. Find out how to fix your app, get it to recognize your car, and change the settings on your phone so that the Tesla app works right by reading on.

Why Your App Isn’t Connecting

The Tesla App You Have Is Old

An old app might suddenly stop working. It might not be able to connect to Tesla’s computers. It might not be able to find your car either.

The software on your phone may also be out of date sometimes. This might make it impossible for you to get the newest app.

The Computers At Tesla Can’t Be Reached By Your App

Tesla does regular maintenance on their servers, which can make their systems go down without warning. Their computers may also get too busy with too many users. Your app will show a “Server Error” message because of this.

A “500 Server Error” notice can appear.

Tesla app connection issues

You Can’t Connect Your Computer To WiFi Or Mobile Data

If your phone is online, the Tesla app will only work. If you’re not near a WiFi or cell phone data network, the app won’t be able to talk to your car.

It’s also possible for this to happen if your gadget is in airplane mode.

The App Hasn’t Added And Matched Your Car Yet

You’ll need to add your new car to the mobile app and then pair it with your car’s Bluetooth system if you just bought it. Before this is done, the app won’t be able to pair with your car or notice it.

This may seem inconvenient, but required adding and pairing helps keep people who aren’t supposed to be there from getting into your car.

Things You Need to Know

Make sure you’re linked to data or WiFi on your device and that the Tesla app is always logged in and able to see where you are.

Keep your Tesla app and car’s software up to date. To connect to your car, make sure that the app knows about it and then pair it with your car’s Bluetooth system.

You can reinstall the app, restart your phone, or turn off your car for two minutes to restart it. Wait two minutes and then open the door to start the car.

How To Fix Problems With The Tesla App

Make Sure Your Gadget Has Data Or WiFi On It

Your Tesla and the app talk to each other over the internet. In your device’s settings, make sure that both mobile internet and WiFi are turned on. If they are already turned on, make sure your device is still linked to a strong WiFi or mobile network.

If airplane mode is on, turn it off first, then connect the app to your car.

You Can Add Your Car To The Tesla App

You can’t connect your brand-new Tesla until it’s been added to your phone app. To do this, open the Tesla app and tap the profile icon in the top right corner. First, go to Add/Remove Products and then click on “Add.” Then, follow the on-screen instructions to add your car. Your car will be added in three to five days.

You’ll need to enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your car, upload official papers, and give proof that you own the car.

Connect Your Car To The Tesla App On Your Phone

You can’t use the app until you pair it with your car’s Bluetooth. Use the tablet in your car to go to Controls > Safety > Allow Mobile Access. Pair your phone with your Tesla by turning on Bluetooth on your phone. From now on, your app will connect to your car by itself.

Check to see if the Tesla app can connect to Bluetooth. If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Tesla and turn on the “Bluetooth” setting. To give Tesla permissions, Android users can go to Settings > Apps > Tesla > Permissions, then choose “Bluetooth” and tap “Allow.”

Let The Tesla App Use Your Phone’s Data

The Tesla app might not be able to use mobile data on your computer until you allow it to. Turn on mobile internet for the Tesla app in the settings of your device, and then try to connect it to your car.

Step 1: On your iPhone, go to Settings and pick the Tesla app. Turn the knob next to “Cellular Data” green.

To see how much app data you’re using on Android, go to Settings > Internet (or “SIMs” for Pixel users). From the list, choose the Tesla app. Next, turn on the settings for “Background data” and “Unrestricted data usage.”

Close The Tesla App And Then Open It Again

There may be bugs in your game. Close and restart the app to reset it, then try to connect it to your car again. Make sure you close the app all the way before you open it again:

iPhone: Scroll up from the bottom of the main display and stop in the center of the screen. To get to the Tesla app when you have other apps open, swipe left or right. Then close the Tesla app by sliding it up.

Slide your finger up from the bottom of your screen, hold, and let go. This app will stop when you swipe up on it.

To Clear Out All Of Your Apps, Restart Your Device

Restarting your phone can sometimes fix apps that won’t work right. Turn off your device all the way, then turn it back on and open the Tesla app. If it was your phone, you should now be able to connect to the car.

iPhone: Hold down one of the volume buttons and the button on the right side of the phone for 30 seconds. The phone will then turn off. Next, hold down the side button until you see the Apple sign. It might take a little while for your phone to fully restart.

If you have an Android Pixel phone, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to restart it. To restart a Samsung device, press and hold the power and volume buttons for 7 seconds.

Let The Tesla App Always Know Where You Are

If your phone isn’t nearby, your car won’t open itself when you get close to it. To fix this, go to the location settings on your device and let the Tesla app always see where you are:

To add the Tesla app, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services on your iPhone and pick it from the list. Pick “Always.”

Android: In the top right corner, swipe down. Then, tap and hold the location button, which looks like a small balloon with a dot in the middle. Look for the Tesla app by clicking on “App location permissions”. The pop-up choice will let you choose “Allowed all the time” from the Tesla app.

Get The Most Current Version Of The Tesla App

If your app is out of date, it might not work right. To get the latest version of the Tesla app, go to your device’s settings. Before you open the app again, make sure the update is done.

iPhone: Go to the App Store and tap the personal picture in the upper right corner. On the list, find the Tesla app and click “Update.”

For Android, open the Google Play Store and tap the icon that looks like a personal picture in the upper right corner. The Tesla app should be on the list when you tap “Manage apps & devices.” If it says “Update Available,” tap the app button to go to the update page.

Remove The Tesla App And Then Restore It

Apps don’t always work or break. Get rid of the Tesla app from your device to fix this. Then get it again from the app store on your device. Open the app and link your car.

On your iPhone, find the Tesla app on the home screen. Hold down the app icon until a choice pops up. Click “Remove App” to get rid of it. Then go back to the App Store and get the app again.

For Android, open the Google Play Store and tap the icon that looks like a personal picture in the upper right corner. The Tesla app should be on the list when you tap “Manage apps & devices.” Pick up the Tesla app and tap “Uninstall” to get rid of it. After that, get the app from the Google Play Store again.

Clear The Cookies For The Tesla Apps

The cache holds data that makes the Tesla app work better, but this data can get damaged from time to time. To connect your phone to your car, go to the app’s settings and clear the cookies. Next, log back into the application.

To get to the Tesla app on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and pick it from the list. Hit “Offload App,” and then hit “Offload App” again in the screen that appears to make sure. Then choose “Reinstall App” to get the info again.

Click on Settings > Storage > Apps on your Android phone and then pick the Tesla app from the list. Just scroll down and click on “Storage.” On the bottom right of your screen, click “Cache” and then “Clear cache.” To get to these choices on an Android device that doesn’t have them, go to Settings > Battery and Device Care > Storage > Apps and choose the Tesla app. On the bottom right of your screen, click “Cache” and then “Clear cache.”

For Two Minutes, Turn Off Your Car Fully To Restart It

Teslas are like computers on wheels, and they need to be reset every so often. Press and hold “Park,” then use the tablet to go to “Controls,” “Safety,” and “Power Off.” Don’t touch the floors, doors, or screens for two minutes. To wake the car up, press the stop pedal and open the door after two minutes. Follow these steps to connect the app to your car.

Any Tesla model can use this method, like the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.

Update The Software In Your Car

If the software in your car is out of date, your app might not be able to link. Touch the “Software” tab on the screen in your car. You’ll see a message on the screen if an update is ready. Click “Install Now” to get the update and put it on your computer. After the update is done, connect your app to your car.

To get things faster, connect your car to WiFi. You can also use your phone as a hotspot if there isn’t any WiFi around.

You can set a time for the software update to happen by typing in the time and clicking “Schedule.”

Change Your Tesla Account Password Again

If the app is giving you trouble, sometimes changing your password can fix it. Open a web browser and log in to your Tesla account. Then, click “Profile Settings.” Click on “Reset” next to “Password.” You will be asked to change your password. Once you have done that, open the app with your new password and connect to your car.

Go to Tesla’s password change page and enter your email address if you have forgotten your password or can’t get into your account. You’ll get an email with a link to change your password.

If You Get A “Server Error” Message, Try Again In Two Hours

If you see a “Server Error” message, it means that Tesla’s data network is down, not your app or car. Tesla could be doing repair on their system, or their network could be too busy. Try every two hours until the app can connect.

If after two hours you are still getting a server error message, restart your device and try again. The problem might not be fixed for a few hours.

There’s no way for you to fix this issue yourself, but don’t worry—there’s nothing wrong with your app or car.

When To Get In Touch With Tesla’s Customer Service

Your App Won’t Connect No Matter What You Do

Something might be wrong with your Tesla account or the car itself. You should call Tesla’s customer service and let them know that your app won’t connect. They can figure out what’s wrong or fix things on their end.

To get in touch with Tesla online, go to its Contact Page and sign in.

To call Tesla’s customer help line, dial 1 (888) 518-3752.

Go to the Tesla store near you and ask for help there.

You Can’t Get Into Your Car

You might not be able to get into your car if your app won’t connect and you can’t find your keyfob. Get in touch with Tesla to have an emergency assistance sent to you. They will help you open your car door by hand.

Tesla may also be able to open your car from afar, as long as the car has WiFi or mobile data.

You Are Not Able To Get Into Your Tesla Account

Call Tesla’s help line at 1-(888)-518-3752 to let them know what’s going on if you can’t get into your account on the website or app and can’t reset your password. For security reasons, your account may be locked if you keep putting in the wrong password too many times.

Someone else might have been trying to get into your account without your permission as well.
